We are happy to be featuring Cameroonian Fashion & Style Blogger, Brenda Chuinkam of the CanNeverBeASkinnyBish. Brenda loves mixing her ensembles with African prints. She has developed her own sense of style and you cannot help but to fall in love with her choice of fashion. Brenda who was a size 16(US) dropped to a size 4 and then to a size 8, has inspired ladies who are trying to feel comfortable in their own skin. She coined her fashion blog name CanNeverBeASkinnyBish from her journey to weight loss.

In an interview with Brenda, she lets us into her world of style and tells us how she became a fashion enthusiast.

Tell us a bit about yourself and why you love fashion

My name is Brenda and I am a Cameroonian currently residing in Canada who loves taking photos, dressing up and improving all aspects of her life as she continues to grow into the woman she wants to be. I love fashion because it honestly makes me happy. Colors, prints, textures-they all bring smiles to my face and I am absolutely thrilled whenever I see a well-put together person, be it male or female. Fashion allows me to be myself or sometimes, an extension of myself!

How did you start your style blog and where did the name come from?

My blog actually started as more of a “self-expression” blog and had nothing to do with fashion. I was going through a period of weight gain after having lost over 60 pounds and felt like sharing my struggles with others. Friends seemed to enjoy the way I dressed and asked me to do more on that and my style blog was born. As for the name, it is again related to my struggle with weight. From being a size 16 to a size 4 and now to a size 8 US. It seems my body type is not meant to be skinny!

How would you describe your style?

I would describe my style as trendy with tons of color and prints. I personally prefer to not have to dress for cold weather and enjoy tropical weather more. This surely has something to do with my Cameroonian roots! I am a huge fan of ankara pieces. If I could wear something ankara everyday, I would!

What is this season’s trend that fits your style the best

As it’s Winter right now, a huge trend is belted scarves! This fits right into my style as I would take either a colorful or bold-printed scarf and belt it to my coat and just like that, you’re standing out and making a fashion statement, all while keeping warm.

What are the trends you wouldn’t embrace

I for one am not a fan of lingerie in public places nor booty shorts leaving nothing to the imagination. I’m sure some people can pull it off but that’s just not for me.

If I were to choose an outfit for a red carpet event, it would most likely be figure hugging and/or mermaid style. The designer would be any of the following (although the list is not exhaustive): Duaba Serwa, Taibo Bacar, April by Kunbi, Iconic Invanity, Elie Saab, Christian Siriano or Stella Jean.

What are your fashion pet peeves

Hmm, well I think fashion is not just the clothes but everything else that brings a look together so I would say ill-fitting or improper under garments and tight shoes are my biggest pet peeves. Same goes for ill-fitting clothes-tailoring is necessary sometimes!
