Cleo and Simon knew each other from Secondary School. Simon was just few classes ahead of Cleo. They met occasionally but never said ‘hello’ even though they admire each other. They were childhood crush who never knew love would bring them back together. Love had it way when their mutual friend reconnected them together some years later. Simon knew there was something special about Cleo but he didn’t had the chance to tell her his feelings in college. Her thoughts and beautiful smile are always in his memory until he had a chance to invite her for a movie date when he was in Seattle. That night was magical for both Simon and Cleo and it is the beginning of their beautiful love story.
We love their vintage-inspired with old Hollywood glam wedding theme. The wedding color theme: Black, White, Red with Gold accent makes the wedding photos colorful and pleasing to the eyes.
How They Met
I first saw Simon when I was about 13years old and had just joined form one at Mzizima Secondary School in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Although he was a few classes ahead of me, I would spot him around school quite often and always thought he was a cute looking guy. Unfortunately, at that time I only knew him as Freddy’s (Nyau’s) older brother.
Over the years I would hear of him once in a while either in conversations with mutual friends or through Nyau.
One fine day, about two and a half years ago, I got a call from Tage who is a mutual friend of ours. He says, “Hey Cleo, remember Simon Kasungu?” I said “Yes”. He said, “He is in town from Seattle and asked for your number; which I gave but hope that’s ok”. I said, “Sure that’s ok he probably just wants me to hook him up with a new Tanzanian Driving Licence”(at the time I was the Technical Director for the Tanzania Smart Card Driving License Project). We laughed about that and hung up. Sure enough, less than 10mins later my phone rings and it’s Simon.
After exchanging pleasantries, I ask “ehe, unasemaje?” (What do you want?). He responded by berating me for thinking that the only reason he would ever call me was because he wanted something from me. Long story short, we decided to meet later and catch a movie together. The conditions were that I would pay for the movie which I agreed to as long as he was the driver for the night. After the movie we ended up at a lounge in town and danced till 5am! We had a great time, it turned out to be a good ‘first date’.
We started hanging out a lot and just getting to know each other. I then travelled to Seattle to visit him and from then we would visit each other back and forth every few months.
The Romantic & Special Proposal
On August 1st 2013; I had planned a romantic getaway somewhere isolated for us because it was Simon’s birthday. We had a wonderful day relaxing by the pool and just spending time together. After dinner, we headed back to our room and I mentally patted myself on the back for successfully organizing a lovely day for the birthday boy not knowing that my life was about to change.
As I was preparing for bed, I noticed that Simon was taking too long to turn out the bedside light after I had already asked him to. So I turn to him to see what’s taking so long and I find a beautiful diamond ring just staring at me. I was so surprised that I blurted out “What? Huh? Are you proposing right now?” And he just looked at me and answered calmly “Yes”. And I said “Wait, wait! I wasn’t ready, ask me again” So he asked me, “Cleo will you marry me?” and I said “Why do you want to marry me?” He simply said “because I want to spend the rest of my life with you”.
It was that simple. And at that moment I realized that’s what made me fall in love with him to begin with – his sincerity.
I said “Yes” and the rest has led us up to where we are today.
