Yimika & Sayo Proposal Story is like a friendship caught on fire. In the beginning a flame, very pretty, often hot and fierce, but still only light and flickering.
How we met
We had met in 2005 briefly through mutual family friends, but we only glanced at each other and said hi.
We then met again in 2007 at a Christmas dinner organised by a Christian Organisation run by one of Sayos friends in Toronto. Sayo approached me and said hi and that he remembered me from 2005. At that time I (Yimika) was thinking, why would this ‘church guy’ want my number lol, but I gave it to him anyway. We exchanged numbers and we started talking frequently. Sayo was initially not open to the idea of a relationship because of his position as a youth leader and the demands of the youth ministry, and I (Yimika) was also hesitant because I didn’t want to be a ‘pastors wife’ (lol). They both eventually were won over by one another, and put those random excuses on the back burner. In early 2009 they officially began dating. So I guess 8 years went by before the wedding, but only 4 were dating years..hahahhhaha
Yimika was off in New York doing her clinical rotations and Sayo was in Canada working his butt off as well.
It was the weekend of my (Yimikas) aunt’s birthday and it was also the Saturday after my night shift at the hospital. My cousins had invited me to come out to a karaoke bar in Manhattan. I was soo exhausted since I just got home that morning. But this was one of my ‘main aunties’..lol.. sisi Lamz we call her, and I didn’t want to miss it. So I slept for a few hours and got dressed.
Little did I know that there was something brewing and my parents (all the way in Nigeria) aunt, cousins, siblings and friends were in on it!! Sigh*
We got to the karaoke bar and we started having fun, singing, dancing, making noise. Then they started playing a song that sayo usually sings to me by Musiq Soul child ‘Don’t change’. So I sent Sayo a bbm message saying ‘babe they are playing our song and I’m singing’. He replied saying ‘ really? Wow! I didn’t know that at that time he was outside the karaoke bar with my sister, brother and his brother.
My cousin asked for them to replay the song with the excuse that the first time we didn’t sing it well enough, then before they started sayo walked in with my sister, brother and his brother. I was in shock. I thought I was dreaming. What were they all doing in New York, they all live and work in Canada. I was soo taken aback I had to sit down because my legs were shaking. Then they started playing ‘don’t change’ again and this time sayo picked up the mic and started singing. I was still shaking and starring into space..lol(what I do when I am surprised).
Then after the song sayo said my full name and asked me to marry him. I just starred at him, then my cousin hit me and said ‘youre supposed to say something’, then I returned from my amazement and said YES….. J
Toast: We toast to a marriage filled with love, laughter and silly-ness + lots of kids.. J
Awww…..A big congrats to them.
