The beauty and style industry seems to be buzzing everyday, as every fashion being tends to come in and infuse his or her own style, despite wherever they tend to fit in. Infact, it is safe to say that the industry is a fast-growing one.

Today, Temitope Sotomi, a professional make-up artiste, who is popularly known by her brand name ‘TDOLLS’ gives an insight into her world of beauty. Trust me, it is a must read.

Do tell us about your personality?

Every day, I feel so fortunate to have a career in a field I am extremely passionate about. It motivates and inspires me daily as I research on new makeup trends and techniques. Not only am I passionate about makeup but I’m also passionate about people. I believe in the value of investing in people.

My goal with every client, no matter the occasion, is to make them feel relaxed and beautiful, both inside and out, or once they step out of my makeup chair.

How would you describe what you do?

Usually, women do their makeup on a normal routine. But most times, some specific occasions like a wedding ceremony, they would love to take it up to the next level. This is when I come in. I make use of different types of cosmetics such as powder, lipsticks or creams, by applying to their faces in the right way. The art of enhancing the appearance and looks of most women is basically what I do. Striving hard to get that amazing and perfect look.

Why do you love it and what does it mean to you?

I have always loved makeup right from when I was a teenager. Infact my dream has always been to go to House of Tara to learn professional makeup since 2008 but at that time, there wasn’t enough funds and there were other priorities at that moment. But in 2012, the zeal to learn makeup professionally came hunting again and I literally tormented my family and friends to add to my savings. In the end, my dad provided the funds for me to learn makeup professionally from the House of Tara.

When did you decide on taking this to the next level?

This was when people started calling me up for bookings. Apparently, they were always reading my blog and always wanting to see more beautiful makeup and video tutorials.

How did you start your blog/vlog?

I have always loved makeup. I love Art so it was easy for me.

Makeup called me. Even if I wasn’t doing this professionally, trust me, I would have been one of those normal ladies who do their makeup well.

So it was a talent and because I wanted a deep knowledge of what it was and what it entails, I decided to brush up my talent and become a professional makeup artist.

Where did the name come from?

TDOLLS is derived from nick name from friends

Any influences?

IL say “passion”.  It was my passion that pushed me to get into the makeup industry I recall that at a young age, my mom would dress me up and do my hair and makeup, and then take photos of me. So I suppose that played a huge role in the bigger scheme of things of what influenced me

What were the early days of your career like?

Honestly, nothing is easy. You see, makeup is an art work and artists are like mini gods. Trying to enhance ones facial features isn’t a child’s play. God has created each individual perfectly, so what we do is to redefine Gods work and that is extra work! That’s why it’s really touching, when I see people heavily criticizing a work of a makeup artist. From the brows to eye shadow blending, foundation blending, right to getting a proper picture for the gram as well as branding is a task of its own. It’s not easy but it’s the passion that’s the driving force.

Is it safe to say that the industry is pretty stiff when it comes to competition?

Yes! it’s very stiff.

What makes you stand out from your colleagues?

Through my previous positions in various industries, I have amassed and honed a unique skill set that makes me a well-rounded and versatile worker.

I am able to tackle issues with a wide perspective and formulate effective problem resolution options. In my jobs, I have also had the opportunity to work with people with various personality types. So I am able to understand and work with different work styles, which I believe helps me with team project as well as when I’m working on projects independently. These traits-along with my genuine desire, to help others has helped to set ‘Tdolls’ apart from my colleagues.

Tell us three tools that your beauty kit cannot be without?

I can’t do without eyelashes, so I have different types for different individuals some like it thick, some go for the really natural look. Also, the glow kit and lip stick.

Where do you see yourself in years to come?

I hope to be one of those household names that other makeup artists look up to and also traveling round the world for work.  I do eventually want to have my own brand.

Few words of advice to other entrepreneurs?

Embrace that you can be the best of whatever you are, embrace that nothing in life is free so whatever you are harvesting today, is the outcome of what is planted in the past. Nothing in life is free. If you want to get the best out of life, much work is needed.  If you are not ready to pay the price of success, then you cannot have it. Nobody became successful by merely wishing. Embrace your slow progress
